The UPMC Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is hosting the 3rd Annual Opioid Epidemic Awareness Fundraiser on Saturday, January 25, 2020 from 7pm to 11pm. I want to invite you and the rest of your department (faculty, administrative staff, fellows, residents, significant others and children) to enjoy a night away from the Pittsburgh winter in the lush gardens of Phipps Conservatory.

This charity event that has been previously sponsored by the UPMC Health Plan, PSA and PANA and we are hoping for continued support from these and other major corporations. Last year we had over 220 healthcare professionals attend and raised over $11,000 and hope to increase that total this year.

Funds raised will be sent to the Light of Life Rescue Mission Organization. Light of Life Rescue Mission was founded in 1952 in Pittsburgh and offers a continuum of care for homeless individuals in Pittsburgh. Last year they provided over 250,000 meals and 10,000+ shelter stays for those in need. At Light of Life, they offer hope to those who are turning away from addiction through their long term residential recovery programs for men and women. They are developing new ways to serve the beloved community, to support those affected by addiction.

Below are the ways you can help support this cause:

1) Please attend the event with any of your friends, family and children. Tickets ($40) include appetizers, soft drinks, cash bar and live auction. Buy Tickets Here

2) Donate a gift for silent auction on the night of the event (sporting event tickets, tech items, art, jewelry, services (babysitting, pet sitting etc.) and more)

3) Donate via GoFundMe

4) Share event on Twitter and invite people to the Facebook Event Page.  This event is multidisciplinary and goes beyond just healthcare professionals. All are welcome!

Below is more information on how the opioid epidemic impacts our surrounding community.

The opioid problem in Western Pennsylvania and across the United States is a public health and public safety emergency.More than 130 people die from opioid related overdose DAILY and 2.1 million people have opioid use disorder.

In 2014, Pennsylvania had the THIRD-highest number of opioid deaths in the country (2,732), behind only California (4,521) and Ohio (2,744). Western Pennsylvania has had SIX of the TEN counties with the highest drug-related death rates per 100,000 people in Pennsylvania.  Within Western Pennsylvania, Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Washington counties represent 55 percent of the overdose deaths in the region. This is an issue that affects our surrounding communities directly.

Dear AHN Family,

For the past few years, the American Association of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has partnered with LifeBox to raise funds to improve the delivery of anesthesia and surgical care around the world, especially in countries with poor access to healthcare. To date, LifeBox has distributed over 18,000 pulse oximeters, trained over 6,000 medical personnel, held nearly 150 workshops, and partnered with over 3,000 hospitals.

Monitoring via pulse oximeters in the operating room and other key areas in the hospital is extremely important.

Imagine providing anesthesia without a pulse oximeter? I can't imagine providing safe anesthesia without that beautiful beeping sound imprinted in our souls? :))

Every $250 raised leads to one pulse oximeter donated to an area of need.

Each year, ASA encourages resident teams to raise funds for this important cause. Our residents have formed a team to take part in the 2019 fundraising challenge.

If you would like to participate and support this great cause, please visit the Allegheny Anesthesiology Residents’ team page to make a donation. (https://donate.lifebox.org/team/228205)

The team has set a fundraising goal of more than $5,000. Anyone can donate as little or as much as they would like. When donating, an option for employer match for many companies is provided for anyone interested.

The winner of the challenge will be announced at the 2019 ASA meeting in Orlando, FL.

Since we started this event in June 2019, there has been two fundraising events (Muffins & Cupcakes Sale during Grand Rounds AGH/WPH July 23, 2019 and August 27, 2019).

Currently we have collected a total of $970! A huge shout out goes to the AHN family and everyone has provided great support to this noble cause. A special shout out goes to Dr. Carlos M. Perez for setting all of this up, we are so proud!

Attached is information of the Lifebox challenge and information of our current standing #6! We still have time to do more so please help us by donating!

Accreditation of Categorical Residency Training Program

We are happy to announce the accreditation of our categorical residency training program! Starting with the 2019-2020 Academic Year, we will match five incoming residents into this program, with plans to increase the number of residents in subsequent years. This new program will allow incoming residents to complete all four years of residency training in the Department of Anesthesiology at AHN. Clinical experiences will include rotations in internal medicine, surgery, critical care medicine and perioperative medicine. We will continue to offer positions in the traditional advanced (PGY-2) residency training program for candidates who select to perform their PGY-1 year elsewhere.
